Avoid These Laser Cutting Mistakes

Lasers can make it much easier to cut and engrave various surfaces. However, for those who are working with laser cutting for the first time, there are many common mistakes that can cause the project to fail or that can lead to an injury.

Not Cutting Acrylics With A Refrigerated System

Do not cut acrylics without using a refrigerated air system. It is too difficult to cut the acrylic without damaging the system. While the air system will cost several thousand dollars more, it is worth it.

Not Scaling Your Drawing

You will always need to scale your drawing before you set it up. The dimensions need to match the dimensions of the laser cutter's bed. How this is done depends on the specific type of software you are using.

Not Using Red Lines

When marking the areas that need to be cut, the laser cutter does not care about what color the lines are. However, it is conventional to mark the areas to be cut red so they are highly visible.

Not Prototyping With Cardboard

When prototyping, make sure to have your prototype done on a piece of cardboard rather than having the prototyping done on the piece that you intend to use. This will ensure that you will be able to make the necessary changes if there is something wrong with the prototype.

Loitering

While the laser cutter is being used, others should not remain in the room and loiter to ensure that there are no safety hazards that are created. Food and drinks should never be kept near the laser cutter. While the laser cutter is being used, the individual who has chosen to operate it must remain in the room with the cutter until the process has been completed.

Not Using Margins

Make sure to allow margins and boundaries for cutting areas. Etching should be placed in a separate layer. The layout will make the laser cutting much more efficient.

Not Straightening Plywood

Plywood is not a good material to cut with laser cutting because it has a bend to it. You may be able to cut it by placing weight on the top of the plank to straighten it out. However, you must make sure that any weight that is applied doesn't interfere with the laser mechanism.

Not Being Careful When Removing Material

Do not be careless when removing material from the laser cutter, since you can hit the head and cause damage or knock the laser head out of alignment. Each of these things to avoid are essential if you want to avoid errors that could potentially ruin your laser cutting project.
